Mother's Day is May 9, 2021

Mother's Day is a day to honor and celebrate moms. On this Mother's Day, please join us in standing with mothers impacted by cancer with a donation to Massey.

Happy Mother's Day

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating mothers who make the world a better place.

Join Massey Nation and our director, Robert Winn, M.D., in honoring and remembering the mothers who have bravely survived cancer, those who have held the hands of their loved ones through their cancer journeys and the mothers whom we have sadly lost.

Together we will create more Mother’s Days by investing in a future without cancer.

HONOR A MOTHER IN YOUR LIFE WITH A GIFT TODAY

In the words of Massey Nation:

Mother's Day is important in our home, as we honor our mothers and I reflect on how my own mom invested all of who she was into making me the best mother that I could be. I'm grateful to pay tribute to my mother, my mother-in-law, my grandmothers and my great-grandmothers for showing me about courage, the importance of faith, and that hope and love surpass all things. As I conquer breast cancer, I lean on those values for strength, and trust that my Massey team is there to help us continue with many more years of tributes to motherhood.

-Rudene Haynes, VCU Massey Cancer Center Advisory Board member and breast cancer patient
My mother and other elder mothers in my family instilled within me values of faith, purpose, and community. Now as a mother of twin sons focused on reducing cancer disparities at Massey, the cancer fight is personal and professional. My boys inspire me everyday to stay active and healthy. I aim to do my part for a world without cancer so that every Mom can be there for her kids.

At Massey, it is my passion to impact other women so that they can continue to celebrate Mother’s Days. I am dedicated to my dual roles, and to moving us closer to a world where Mother’s Days are always a day of celebration and not one of loss.

-Vanessa Sheppard, Ph.D., Associate director of the Office of Health Equity and Disparities Research and mother of two
Robert Winn, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center, reflects on his grandmother:

Robert Winn, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center, reflects on his grandmother:

"Moms give of themselves every day to provide love and care, to guide and inspire not only their children, but all of us. For as long as I can remember, my grandma has told me grace and humility are keys to a good life. I’m from New York, but she always reminds me I’m ‘of Virginia.’ She grew up in Middlesex County at a time when it was unheard of for a Black man to be the director of a cancer center. The day I told her I accepted this position, I felt her pride. It took years of schooling and training to earn the letters M.D. after my name, but I have to say my grandma’s lessons are truly what helped me get here."
