On Thursday, May 20, in honor of Brain Cancer Awareness Month, VCU Massey Cancer Center’s neuro-oncology team presented an “Insider’s Experience” virtual panel presentation highlighting critical breakthroughs and advances in neuro-oncology that are improving care of patients with brain cancer.

“[Our team] is dedicated to an interdisciplinary and comprehensive focus,” says Mark Malkin, M.D., chair of the Division of Neuro-oncology. “This is Brain Cancer Awareness Month, which is why we are all wearing gray, for grey matter [the outer most layer of brain tissue]… because gray matters.”

The team discussed two new and upcoming clinical trials for glioblastoma; a novel approach being spearheaded by neuropsychologist Ashlee Loughan, Ph.D., to care for patients’ emotional wellbeing; and Massey’s work to educate the community about and engage them in the need for further scientific advances against brain cancer. Neuro-oncology team member and patient advocate Robin Boisseau also shared her personal connection to glioblastoma.

For further information about any of the panelists' work or how to help advance progress against brain cancer, please contact Cindy Zilch in Massey’s Development Office at czilch@vcu.edu or 804-828-1452.
