Massey partners with Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center to provide radiation oncology care

Nov 14, 2012

VCU Massey Cancer Center will jointly provide radiation oncology services at a new cancer center scheduled to open in April 2013 at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center (SRMC) in Spotsylvania, Va. The two organizations have partnered under an agreement between HCA Virginia Health System and VCU Health System, a component of the VCU Medical Center that delivers Massey’s clinical oncology care.
“Massey is pleased to partner with SRMC to serve the greater Spotsylvania community,” said Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., director of VCU Massey Cancer Center. “The addition of radiation oncology services there will offer more treatment options and will expand access to innovative therapies for area cancer patients. This partnership also presents another opportunity to make available Massey’s patient care and research to more Virginians.”

The partnership with SRMC represents the latest of Massey’s clinical partnerships and clinical research affiliations with community health systems and oncology medical practices in extending Massey’s National Cancer Institute-designated research throughout the state. Massey currently has other clinical care partnerships in metropolitan Richmond, South Hill, Emporia and Kilmarnock and clinical research affiliations in Fredericksburg, Winchester, Lynchburg, Hampton Roads and Danville.

“Radiation oncology will be a key service provided at our new cancer center, which will offer a level of diagnostic and treatment services unsurpassed in the region,” said Margaret Lewis, Senior Executive of HCA Virginia and President of HCA’s Richmond-based Capital Division.  “The collaboration between Massey and SRMC will enable us to combine our clinical and operational expertise to better serve patients.”

The cancer center, which will encompass 7,000 square feet and cost $7 million to build and equip, will feature a linear accelerator, a CT simulator and mobile PET/CT capabilities.  Regulatory approvals for the technology and facility have already been received. The center will be located in the Pogonia Medical Arts Building, which is attached to Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. In the first year, it is projected to have more than 4,000 patient visits, including those for radiation oncology, PET/CT and infusion services.

In addition to VCU Massey radiation oncologists, the cancer center will tap the clinical expertise of medical and surgical oncologists from the Spotsylvania region, as well as other physician specialists who see cancer patients. SRMC is located in a health services planning district (Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, Fredericksburg) with one of the highest rates of cancer in Virginia.

Said John Duval, CEO of MCV Hospitals, a component of the VCU Medical Center: “This partnership at SRMC’s new cancer center to deliver radiation oncology services presents a wonderful opportunity to jointly enhance cancer care in the region.”

“Our cancer center will provide services that are not only highly sophisticated, but also convenient to patients who live or work in the area,” said Tim Tobin, CEO of SRMC.  “This partnership with VCU Massey is directly in keeping with our emphasis on offering clinical capabilities that are fully responsive to our community’s needs.”
