A comprehensive cancer center for the 21st century

VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center’s comprehensive designation – the highest recognition from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) – reflects our scientific leadership, depth and breadth of research, effective community outreach and cancer research training and education.

Driving the nation’s research agenda

Leading the charge – locally, regionally and nationally

As a comprehensive cancer center, Massey is helping inform the new standard of care, not just for other cancer centers but for community providers and health care systems alike. See how Massey is leading the charge through expanded research, training and education and community outreach.

Introducing a new generation of cancer centers — one that integrates community input into everything we do in order to close health care gaps.

Massey is one of two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Virginia – leading and shaping America’s cancer research efforts – with the community at its core. Massey was first awarded NCI designation in 1975, just one year after receiving a planning grant from the NCI to establish a cancer center at VCU. This designation makes us eligible for federal funding, information-sharing and resources reserved for the most elite institutions that demonstrate superior research capabilities. We have retained that prestigious designation ever since and are proud to have been awarded comprehensive status in 2023.

"We are leading the charge, not just in research but in building trust and breaking down barriers between medical institutions and communities.”

– Robert A. Winn, M.D., VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center director
