HONOR A DOCTOR WITH A GIFT TODAYNational Doctors’ Day is March 30th
Your doctor is more than a caregiver. At VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, our doctors are champions, confidants and, through challenging times, heroes.
National Doctors’ Day honors physicians across the U.S. for their dedication to their patients and commitment to improving health. At Massey, we’re imagining a future without cancer. And our doctors will help us get there.
At Massey, our physician-scientists share a commitment to intellectual curiosity, scientific expertise and personalized patient care. They conduct basic, clinical and population sciences research to discover better ways to prevent, diagnose, treat and control all types of cancer — and save and improve lives. As caregivers at a safety-net hospital, their commitment means the highest-quality care for all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

Leopondo Fernandez, M.D.: Massey Challenge frontrunner
Massey surgical oncologist Leopoldo Fernandez, M.D., specializes in gastrointestinal cancers and expertise in minimally invasive surgery and intraperitoneal chemotherapy, Fernandez is one of only a handful of cancer care providers in Virginia to offer HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) to treat advanced abdominal cancers that have spread through the peritoneal cavity.
Dr. Fernandez is also a frontrunner in this year’s Massey Challenge, presented by Apex Systems, as captain of “Team Heat Wave.” Massey is the official charitable partner of the Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10K. Dr. Fernandez’s team name is inspired by the ideas of turning up the heat against cancer and making waves to fight it, and a way of showing all of Richmond what it means to “10k the Massey Way”
“I've run other races, from 5Ks to marathons,” said Fernandez. “But, there's nothing quite like the spirit of Richmond’s Monument Avenue 10k. Taking such a fun race and adding the opportunity to save lives through the Massey Challenge really shows us what it means to be a part of Team Massey. I’m excited to be a part of it!" - Leopondo Fernandez, M.D., Massey surgical oncologist
