Monica L. Baskin, Ph.D., will serve as the interim director of Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Baskin is the deputy director of research at Massey and associate dean for cancer innovation in the VCU School of Medicine, with appointments as professor in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care in the Department of Internal Medicine, and professor in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the School of Public Health.

Baskin will begin in the interim role later this spring.

“It is a privilege to step into the role of interim cancer center director,” Baskin said. “Together, we will continue to build on our strong foundation, foster collaboration across disciplines and ensure our work translates into meaningful impact for patients and communities.”

In her time as deputy director, Baskin has worked to strengthen Massey’s impact throughout its catchment area, which covers central, southern and eastern Virginia. Baskin has also elevated Massey’s national presence and prominence by presenting at several national conferences since joining Massey in 2025.

“Dr. Baskin has elevated Massey’s impact locally, regionally, and nationally,” said VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D.. “We are thrilled that she will continue the center’s uncommon resolve in leading the way in cancer care for all Virginians.”

An expert in community outreach and engagement, her research focuses on community-engaged approaches to understand and address lifestyle factors associated with cancer prevention and control (e.g., healthy eating, physical activity, obesity). Her experience with Cancer Center Support Grant evaluations and the renewal process will be invaluable as Massey approaches its next cycle, supported by an outstanding leadership team and nationally recognized faculty.

“Massey has made tremendous strides in comprehensive cancer care over the past several years, and Dr. Baskin is deeply committed to building on that progress,” said Marlon Levy, M.D., senior vice president, VCU Health Sciences, and CEO, VCU Health.

“Part of our unwavering commitment to cancer care is building an outstanding team at Massey, and we look forward to partnering with Dr. Baskin as she leads Massey into its next chapter.”

Baskin’s appointment comes following the March 19 announcement by Robert A. Winn, M.D., who has served as Massey’s director since 2019, to leave VCU in June to assume a new role at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.
