Douglas Arthur, M.D., associate director for clinical affairs and vice chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, has been awarded the Natalie N. and John R. Congdon, Sr. Endowed Chair in Cancer Research, in recognition of his significant, ongoing contributions to VCU Massey Cancer Center’s research mission. 

Arthur joined VCU Massey Cancer Center in 1994. He is an expert in the treatment of breast cancers, but also treats a variety of head and neck, genitourinary and soft tumor malignancies. Arthur has led several clinical trials evaluating novel brachytherapy and external beam radiation therapy techniques. He also helped develop Accuboost, an image-guided method to improve radiation dose delivery, and led a clinical trial evaluating a novel brachytherapy device for the treatment of breast cancer known as Contura Multilumen Balloon.

The Congdon Endowed Chair was established in 2013 by John (Jack) Congdon. Prior to his passing in September 2013, Jack Congdon had made several generous gifts to Massey in memory of his late wife, Natalie, who battled cancer.  The couple’s children, Susan, John and Jeff, and their spouses and children along with extended family continue the family’s remarkable support of Massey’s research.  In addition to the endowed chair, a research wing in Massey’s Goodwin Research Laboratory was named for Natalie and Jack Congdon and funds were directed to help establish Massey’s Research Affiliates Network to enable Massey to bring promising clinical trials to citizens across the Commonwealth.
