Masey Ross named medical director of clinical research affiliations
Oct 20, 2020

Masey Ross, M.D., M.S., has been appointed medical director of clinical research affiliations at VCU Massey Cancer Center and VCU School of Medicine. She is also the medical director of Massey’s Integrative Health Program and an assistant professor in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care, Department of Internal Medicine at the VCU School of Medicine.
In her new role, Ross will manage a quality clinical trials program for VCU Massey Cancer Center’s statewide Clinical Research Affiliate Network. She will work closely with Massey’s interim associate director for clinical research, Harry Bear, M.D., Ph.D., and Massey’s Minority/Underserved NCI Community Oncology Research Program (MU-NCORP) team to make available the cancer center’s promising clinical trials to its clinical research affiliated-community oncology practices and hospitals. Massey is one of just 14 cancer centers in the country to hold a MU-NCORP grant, which helps support Massey’s statewide research affiliate network and places particular importance on increasing access to cancer research for minority and underserved patients.
“VCU Massey Cancer Center is dedicated to extending the most advanced cancer treatments and innovative research to our communities,” said Robert Winn, M.D., cancer center director at Massey and senior associate dean for cancer innovation at the VCU School of Medicine. “We are grateful to have Dr. Ross lead the expansion of Massey’s clinical trials throughout the state.”
A board-certified medical oncologist, Ross specializes in the treatment of breast cancer as well as integrating evidence-based complementary therapies into patient care as a holistic approach to health and healing. Her research focuses on integrative health and program development as it relates to oncology patients and providers. Ross has also served as a co-investigator on various cancer clinical trials.
“With Dr. Ross’ leadership, Massey’s clinical trial affiliations will help more patients access the latest cancer therapies, medical devices and prevention methods obtained through clinical trials,” said Khalid Matin, M.D., interim chair of the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care at the School of Medicine and principal investigator of Massey’s MU-NCORP and associate medical director of the Cancer Service Line at Massey.
Ross joined VCU in 2011 for her internal medicine residency, then completed a hematology/ oncology fellowship and joined the faculty in 2017 as an assistant professor. She earned a medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine and a Masters of Science in Integrative Health from Georgetown University.
Ross was presented with the Outstanding Fellow Award at VCU for her commitment to humanism in medicine and received Honors in Bioethics and Professionalism from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine. She is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the Society for Integrative Oncology.
“It’s an honor to partner with our clinical research affiliates to better serve our neighbors across Virginia by offering them access to cancer research and clinical trials in the communities where they live,” said Ross.
