Robert A. Winn, M.D., director and Lipman Chair in Oncology at VCU Massey Cancer Center, will serve a three-year term as a scientific editor for Cancer Discovery, effective March 1, 2023.

Launched in 2011, Cancer Discovery is a peer-reviewed medical journal published monthly by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Articles cover major advances in basic, translational and clinical cancer research.

“Cancer Discovery has been at the forefront of publishing impactful scientific research and incisive news and commentaries on cancer health disparities,” said Lewis C. Cantley, Ph.D., the Cancer Discovery editor-in-chief and professor in the Department of Cancer Biology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. “[This content includes] a recent Science in Society piece by Dr. Winn urging the cancer research community to rebuild scientific infrastructures to reduce disparities in clinical trial enrollment.”

In his new role, Winn will advise Cancer Discovery’s in-house editorial team about manuscript submissions and will be an ambassador for the journal by advancing its scope, influence and service to the scientific community.

“Not long ago, the phrase cancer research only stirred up images of microscopes, white lab coats and work happening behind closed doors,” said Winn. “Today I am proud that more institutions recognize community engagement as essential to science. The more we involve the individuals we serve in our research, the greater impacts we can make.”

Winn will tap into his network to solicit original research articles, reviews and commentaries. He will also contribute his own for possible inclusion in the journal.

“As a visionary thought leader in this space, Dr. Winn’s guidance will help advance the journal’s goals of moving the conversation about cancer health disparities forward and showcasing cutting-edge scientific research to improve outcomes for all patients,” said Luis A. Diaz, M.D., Cancer Discovery editor-in-chief and head of Solid Tumor Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Winn will participate in the Board of Scientific Editors discussion at the AACR Annual Meeting, held in the spring. Additionally, he will provide advice and guidance on the overall direction of the journal at a virtual meeting held each fall.
