As VCU Massey Cancer Center prepares for its National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) renewal, the cancer center has received unprecedented support in Virginia’s 2022-24 budget.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin and the General Assembly approved $25 million in funding for Massey; it is the first time the state has reached or exceeded the $20 million Massey has targeted for several years.

“At Massey, we often envision a future without cancer and what that means for the communities we serve across Virginia,” said Robert A. Winn, the director and Lipman chair in Oncology at Massey. “When state leaders commit to this level of funding, it helps in our fight against cancer and will also help to save more lives. A future without cancer is within reach. Thank you to the commonwealth for investing in the future of Virginians.”

A large percentage of the state funding will go to research, one of the areas outlined by the NCI as a priority for CCSG renewal. In recent years, Massey has amplified research efforts surrounding cancer disparities across Virginia.

Currently, Massey draws its patients from 66 contiguous localities in the central, eastern, and southern areas of Virginia. This geographic area and population, defined by the NCI as Massey’s catchment, is home to approximately 4 million racially, ethnically, geographically and socioeconomically diverse individuals.
