On October 20, VCU Massey Cancer Center opened the doors to its newly renovated treatment area in the Dalton Oncology Clinic, which is located on the ground floor of North Hospital at the VCU Medical Center downtown campus.

The renovations were done to improve patient comfort, privacy and safety. The size of the treatment space was enlarged, and it features a fresh design, with soothing colors, updated fixtures and new furniture. The space includes four private treatment rooms as well as an expansive, open room comprised of 20 pods that give each patient a semi-private area with room for a family member or friend. Each pod is equipped with a television, set of headphones and nurse call bell system. More patient bathrooms, physician work rooms and nurse stations were also added.

“We are pleased to be able to offer this beautiful, refreshed space for our patients,” said Sherman Baker Jr., M.D., medical director of the Dalton Oncology Clinic at Massey and associate professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care at the VCU School of Medicine. “Treatment sessions can last several hours each day, so we want our patients to be as comfortable as possible while they are receiving treatment.”

The renovations to the treatment space complete one phase of a larger, ongoing reconstruction of the Dalton Oncology Clinic. Improvements were made to the North Hospital entrance, lobby and valet circle in 2012, and more, exciting upgrades to the waiting room, pharmacy, some exam rooms, wig salon and medical legal partnership office are planned.

Therapies provided in the Dalton Oncology Clinic treatment area include chemotherapy infusions, blood transfusions and IV fluids for patients with cancer and hematologic disorders.
