What is social distancing?
Apr 23, 2020

We've been hearing a lot about social distancing to help flatten the curve of COVID-19. What exactly is social distancing and what activities are still okay?
Social distancing is the act of deliberately increasing the physical space between people to stop the spread of illness. Social distancing is essential so you can avoid coming in contact with the virus, and it’s especially important for those who are in active cancer treatment because the risk of infection is high. What does social distancing mean for you?
Here are some activities that are safe and encouraged during social distancing:
- Take a walk or go on a hike
- Go for a bike ride or a drive
- Practice yoga
- Have group video chats with friends and family
- Read a good book
- Cook a meal
- Listen to music
- Watch a movie or show
- Have a family dance party or game night
- Clean your house
Proceed with caution
The following activities can be safe, but make sure you are limiting social interaction and washing your hands afterward:
- Visiting restaurants for take-out orders
- Going to the grocery store
- Getting medication at the pharmacy
- Visiting a public park
- Essential travel and/or public transportation
Avoid
- Group gatherings
- Sleepovers and playdates
- Concerts and theater outings
- Athletic events
- Gyms
- Retail stores and malls
- Visitors in your home
- Non-essential travel and/or public transportation
