About AACR Cancer Research Education for Success (CARES) Program
This summer program offers Richmond City high school students a unique opportunity to earn a $4,000 stipend and gain hands-on experience in cancer research at the VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center in downtown Richmond. Students will spend six weeks (30 hours/week) gaining hands-on laboratory skills to support future academic and careers. Through this program, students will be able to:
- Network and build meaningful relationships with trainees, cancer researchers, mentors and other staff members
- Learn about cancer burden in Virginia, health disparities and community-engaged research
- Create and present a scientific poster at the end of the program
- Gain early exposure to biomedical research while supporting skill development and professional growth within the cancer research community
CARES Program Details
- Program Dates: June 15 – July 24, 2026
- Time Commitment: 30 hours/week (in-person)
About the Program:
- A 6-week mentored laboratory cancer research experience with a Massey faculty member including:
- A week long cancer research bootcamp
- A structured series of cancer research seminars, professional development workshops, and symposia
- Post-program, students will be required to participate in the AACR-continued mentorship program
Eligibility and Application Requirements:
- Applicants must be a rising high school junior or senior enrolled in a public or private school within the City of Richmond, Virginia
- Students with an interest in science, medicine or research
- A copy of your current resume must be submitted with application
- Recommendation Letter required from a teacher, supervisor, coach, mentor or similar reference
- For additional guidance, download and review the letter of recommendation guidelines
- In-person participation in downtown Richmond is required for the complete duration of the program
Additional Notes:
- Students must arrange their own transportation to and from our downtown campus
- Daily meals are not provided
- This program prioritizes students who have not previously had access to laboratory research opportunities
