Amidst an ever-changing national landscape, Massey has remained agile and resilient in times of uncertainty. Our belief that strong science must be informed by the community it intends to benefit and that exceptional cancer care cannot exist without compassion has guided us through change, and as a result, has deepened our commitment to the community across all aspects of the center.
This report reflects the collective efforts of our team, both within Massey and across the commonwealth, who make this work possible. I would also like to recognize the undeniable impact of my predecessor, Robert A. Winn, M.D. His leadership has been a cornerstone of the center’s continued growth and success. As we turn the page to a new chapter for VCU Massey – I am energized by our continued dedication to improving cancer outcomes for all.

Comprehensive Care Delivered Across ONE VCU
Comprehensive is not just a recent addition to Massey’s title. It is a commitment; a way of operating across the VCU Enterprise. Cross-team collaborations across the urban health campus increase access, awareness and improve patient-centered care, no matter the diagnosis. For Samantha “Sam” Edall, Greg Leitz, and Michael Stigall, their cancer journeys took many paths. Thanks to multidisciplinary teams within the center and across VCU Health, their care went above and beyond just the treatment of their disease.

Bridging the Cancer Care Gap for Rural Communities
Massey is expanding its statewide partnerships to offer clinical trials closer to home as rates of cancer continue to rise among rural populations. With an expanded network of affiliate sites, record-high enrollment, and new cancer detection methods being evaluated using a simple blood test, Massey’s commitment to expanding access to care is bringing the newest therapies directly to the community.

With a staggering 34 percent drop in the cancer death rate since 1991, cancer advancements reflect a long-standing commitment to translating basic science discoveries into innovative treatments that directly benefit the community. Massey continues to influence thought leadership across the nation, marked by the addition of visionary new leaders, an ongoing commitment toward advancing care, strengthening communities, and championing the work that bring us closer to improved cancer outcomes for all—without exception.

Becky Massey
A 2025 honoree at the “Women Who Drive Richmond” gala, Becky Massey has been at the heart of VCU Massey for over three decades. Today, she is living proof of the power of science as she celebrates 10-years cancer free and is a beacon of hope for those facing a cancer diagnosis.
Rev. Rachel Pierce
Since joining the Facts & Faith Fridays team in 2023, Rev. Rachel Pierce has helped to curate more than 100 community conversations, bridging the gap between faith and science. Her work brings members from many different communities together toward a common goal: making health care more accessible.
Mary Simmons
As a Massey Cancer Champion, Mary Simmons is more than just a survivor. She is actively involved in community-focused events like the Closing the Gap Summit and the Virginia Cancer Conference, and advocates for cancer research funding and patient access to care on Capitol Hill.
