Massey researcher elected to the International Statistical Institute

VCU Massey Cancer Center researcher Dipankar Bandyopadhyay, Ph.D., was recently elected as a member of the prestigious International Statistical Institute.

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1885 to promote the understanding, development and good practice of statistics worldwide. Elected membership is open to individuals who are established in their careers and have made noteworthy contributions to the statistical profession.

“This is a significant honor and I am humbled with my election,” said Bandyopadhyay, who is also the director of Massey’s Biostatistics Shared Resource core and a professor in the Department of Biostatistics in the VCU School of Medicine. “Election to the ISI is a testimony of my decade-long contributions to developing novel statistical tools for answering several epidemiologically stubborn questions arising in a variety of public health and bio-medicine domains, including cancer.”

This recognition will provide Bandyopadhyay with access to a global network of distinguished statisticians from 150 countries, opportunities to attend international conferences and the ability to serve on various ISI committees.

“I am delighted to know that my international peers considered my research to be credible,” said Bandyopadhyay. “I have been involved with ISI activities for quite some time now, including giving presentations and organizing competitive invited sessions at their biennial World Congresses. This elected membership will only strengthen those interactions for the future.”

Bandyopadhyay works to understand the factors that influence cancer in specific populations and conducts data analyses on clinical trials for all forms of cancer. He has conducted a number of well-regarded studies using a statistical inference method called Bayesian statistics, which updates the probability of a hypothesis as more information becomes available.

He has served as a key author on over 100 publications and received numerous awards and honors, including the 2020 Gertrude M. Cox award presented by the Washington Statistical Society and RTI International.
