Massey's Cancer Survivor Spotlight

June is national cancer survivor month, and VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center is proud to have helped increase the national survivorship rate by 34% since 1991.
In the spirit of the month, we wanted to spotlight some of the patients who have made an impact on Massey over the last year:
Mary Beth Brault
When faced with a leukemia diagnosis, Mary Beth Brault turned to VCU Massey for her care, eventually receiving a stem cell transplant from her son, Colin.
Silly Genius
A local artist, Silly Genius participated in Massey’s “Brushstrokes of Discovery” mural project. Little did he know then that just six months later he would be a patient at Massey, too.
Greg Leitz
A firefighter in Spotsylvania County, Greg Leitz found both physical and mental healing at Massey after his Gleason 9 prostate cancer diagnosis.
Sam Edall
When diagnosed with breast cancer and heart failure in a two-day span, Sam Edall turned to Massey and VCU Health’s cardio-oncology program, where a team of specialists guided her on the path to recovery.

Tasha Cade
Finding out she was pregnant with her first child in 2022 should have brought on feelings of elation, excitement and anticipation for Tasha Cade. Instead, in her first trimester, she was delivered news no one wants to hear: “you have cancer.” With the help of Massey’s cancer service line, Tasha navigated both her diagnosis and pregnancy, delivering a healthy baby boy in 2023.

Upon checking into Massey for his bone marrow transplant, Michael Stigall was awed by the care he received. So much so that upon his departure, he played the song he wrote for Massey’s staff, “My DNA.”
