Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM)

Transmission electron microscopy

The VCU Microscopy Facility provides investigators with the equipment and expertise required to examine subcellular details with a high resolution by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Consultation, instruction, assistance, collaboration and service are provided. TEM services include sample preparation, fixation, embedding, ultra-microtomy (i.e. sectioning), staining, TEM imaging, photography, immuno-localization (i.e. immunogold EM), and negative staining.

The Microscopy facility houses an assortment of TEM equipment including:

  • Jeol JEM-1230 transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a Gatan UltraScan 4000SP 4K x 4K CCD camera and a Gatan Orius SC1000 side mount CCD camera.
  • Leica EM UC6/EM FC6 cryo-ultramicrotome
  • LKB 2128 ultramicrotome
  • Three LKB Knifemakers
  • Ladd Vacuum Evaporator

A new TEM (Jeol JEM-1400Plus) is to be installed in the Microscopy Facility sometime during late May, 2017.
